How to Get More Eyes on Your Blog

5/10/22

Content Marketing

Blogging is one of the best strategies you can have for your business and brand. You can boost brand awareness, secure brand loyalty, become a go-to expert in your industry, and help out audiences by teaching them something new or helping them overcome a hurdle. But, we’d be failing at life if we didn’t share one of the top reasons you need to be blogging: organic visibility.

The more (high-quality) content you produce, the higher the chances of drawing in visitors to your website. As a result, those visitors can become prospects, then leads, then customers, then loyalists. Which is pretty remarkable, right?

But in order for all of that to happen, people have to see your blog first. There’s nothing quite like spending lots of time and energy on your blog posts just to reach virtually no one.

So, how do you get more eyes on your blog? Thankfully, there are lots of ways to do just that, and we’re sharing them with you right now.

Make your blogs optimized

First thing’s first, you want to make sure that your blogs are actually optimized for search engines, which is a practice called Search Engine Optimization (SEO). Back in the day, that would require stuffing your blogs to the brim with keywords so they could climb the search results rankings. But that’s a huge no-no in today’s online world.

Instead, you want to produce content that’s well-written, engaging, relevant, and accessible for audiences. That also includes following SEO best practices, like:

  • Using headers (H1s, H2s, H3s, etc.)
  • Integrating keywords and phrases naturally throughout
  • Using bulleted lists to help with readability and scannability
  • Linking to pages within your site
  • Linking to credible outside sources
  • Using live text whenever possible
  • Adding alt text to images, graphics, and GIFs
  • Hitting the optimal word count for blog posts

At the very least, all of your blog posts should have most – if not all – of the above elements. And because we know that SEO can be tricky to navigate, we’ve put together an entire Content Guide to SEO for you to use. We also suggest hiring copywriters with SEO knowledge to make your life that much easier.

Update old blog posts

The pressure to produce shiny new content every week or every month can be a lot. But we’re here to let you in on a secret: Google values old content, too. And updating your old blog posts can be a great way to get more eyes on them.

That’s because it signals to Google that you’re putting in the work to make sure your content stays relevant, factually correct, and up-to-date. It also gives you lots of opportunities to re-promote them in the future (more on that later). Yes, this tactic may take some time and heavy lifting on your end, but the results will be worth it. Here’s a checklist to get you started:

  • Remove content that’s no longer relevant
  • Add any new content to make sure it stays relevant
  • Fix any broken links
  • Add new links
  • Update headers to be more keyword-rich
  • Update the blog title to the current year (so audiences know right away that they’re reading an updated version)
  • Add a ‘last updated’ date next to the ‘published’ or ‘posted’ date

Make them shareable

If you want more eyes on your blog, don’t put all of the work on you. We live in an age where we can share anything in a matter of one simple click, and your blogs should be no exception. So, simply make them shareable!

Use a plugin or software that lets readers share right then and there on your website. If you’re posting your blog on other channels – like Facebook, LinkedIn, or Pinterest – make sure your settings allow other users to share it on their channels. Speaking of…

Promote them on social

Don’t be afraid to share every single blog post on your social media platforms. Hell, you can even share old blog posts as long as they’re still relevant and contain evergreen content. And don’t limit yourself here, either. Share your blogs on:

  • Instagram (posts, stories, reels, videos)
  • Facebook
  • LinkedIn
  • Pinterest
  • Twitter
  • YouTube
  • And anywhere else you can!

Tee up each blog with a teaser of what it’s about or a problem you’re gonna help solve. Ask yourself, “What’s in it for them?” and write a caption or post that answers the question.

Pro tip: Don’t forget to share your blogs on your email newsletters, too! Promoting blogs to an audience you already know is interested in your content is a slam dunk for more visibility.

Mix up your content types

Getting people to your blog is one thing. But getting them to stay is another. So, if you want people to come back again and again, make it worth their while with a variety of content types!

Even if your blog focuses on only a handful of topics, you can still diversify the way you present it. We’re talking things like:

  • Adding interesting and relevant images
  • Creating infographics
  • Repurposing blogs into checklists, how-to guides, and listicles
  • Incorporating videos
  • Using GIFs throughout

Whatever new content you bring to the table, go for it! Just make sure that everything is still accessible by adding alt text, captions, and live text.

Write guest posts for other blogs

If you have a business friend, mentor, or brand crush out there, hit them up and ask if you can write a guest post for them! Sharing is caring in the entrepreneur world, and tapping into other people’s audiences is a great way to grow your brand awareness and establish trust.

Take some time to craft personalized emails or DMs to others, letting them know what you want to write about and what value you’ll bring to their business and brand. If it’s a success, don’t be afraid to ask about future guest blogs or even a weekly or monthly series.

Since the end goal of this tactic is to get more eyes on your blog, be sure to add links and resources throughout the guest post and in your byline, so audiences can go directly to your site and explore all the wonderful things you have to offer.

Collaborate with other blogs

Just like guest writing, collaboration is another solid tactic to get more eyes on your blog. There’s always power in numbers, and writing a blog for multiple audiences is a great way to tap into them. Reach out to entrepreneurs and businesses that have already established brand trust, loyalty, and authority. If audiences trust them, they’re much more likely to trust you.

Again, you want to make sure that every pitch you make is tailored to whoever you’re asking;  you don’t want to follow a copy-and-paste template here. Really show them that what you have to contribute is valuable, worth their time, and worth their readers’ time (because it is, dammit!). And hopefully, you end up working with some amazing people along the way who are more than willing to help you out (and get more eyes on your blog, of course).

Create a holistic content strategyBlogs should never be just blogs. Blogs should become emails and social posts and videos and Reels and podcasts and presentations and carrier pigeon letters. Really thinking about how you can turn your blog topic into more content can give your content legs.
